What does the provider need to do to improve?
- Leaders should raise expectations so that all students gain the detailed knowledge they require for their next steps and are challenged to achieve their highest potential.
- Leaders should ensure that all teachers focus on ensuring that students have sufficient knowledge in advance of assessments so that more students pass their assessments on their first attempt.
- Leaders should ensure that staff monitor the progress of students with high needs towards their wider education and health care plan outcomes so that students are fully equipped with all of the knowledge and behaviours required for independence.
What does the provider need to do to improve further?
- Improve attendance rates across all courses, particularly in English and mathematics lessons for 16- to 18-year-old learners and adults, so that they are aligned to college targets. Ensure that all learners attend punctually.
- Improve the rigour of improvement strategies, so that leaders, managers and governors bring about a rapid improvement in the small number of subject areas that are still performing below expected standards.
- Improve further the quality of teaching, learning and assessment, by ensuring that the most able learners achieve the high grades of which they are capable.
- Improve the qualification outcomes for learners on GCSE English and mathematics courses to ensure that learners improve their grades and achieve the high grades that they will need for the next stages in their learning, training or employment.
What does the provider need to do to improve further?
- Improve teaching, learning and assessment by:
- ensuring that learners attend more frequently and attendance rates rise, especially in English and mathematics lessons
- providing learners and apprentices with clear and specific feedback on their work that enables them to improve their skills, knowledge and understanding
- ensuring that teachers and assessors set and agree with learners and apprentices specific and challenging targets for improvement that are then reviewed within agreed timescales
- ensuring that teachers plan lessons carefully, taking into account the starting points of learners and apprentices, so that learning activities challenge all learners, including the most able.
- Increase the number of apprentices that achieve their qualification within the planned time.
- Increase the number of adults on vocational courses who complete their courses and achieve qualifications.
- Diminish the difference in achievement between different groups of learners so that all learners achieve equally well.
- Improve the development of learners’ English skills and raise the pass rates in English and mathematics qualifications.
- Ensure that all learners and apprentices develop a wider understanding of the risks of radicalisation and extremism.
- Provide governors with clear and accurate information about learners’ progress and achievement so they can challenge senior leaders more effectively.
What does the provider need to do to improve further?
- Improve the quality of assessment in apprentices’ files to include detailed annotated feedback and tighten the procedures for tracking and monitoring apprentice progress in reviews so that apprentices achieve in a timely manner.
- Ensure that all learners receive precise, detailed written feedback from tutors and targets so that they have a good understanding of their progress and what they need to do to improve.
- Ensure that all tutors set the highest expectations for learners’ attendance and punctuality to lessons. Implement more rigorous procedures for recording, monitoring and improving attendance at lessons.
- Ensure that English and mathematics are effectively meeting the needs of all learners by making sure that classes do not have students with such a wide range of levels and that tutors are able to use individual targets to challenge more able students to accelerate their learning and support the less able to maximise their potential.
- Ensure that managers make best use of college links with employers to make sure that all learners on the study programme are able to receive meaningful external work experience that will prepare them for work
- Enhance the overall standard of teaching, learning and assessment by ensuring that managers use the information from the observation process to identify detailed targets for improvement and that they use the appraisal of staff to closely monitor and evaluate the impact.
Areas for improvement
The college should address:
- low success rates on adult short courses
- the proportion of outstanding teaching
- the inconsistency in tutorial arrangements.
What should be improved
- retention rates for adult students on courses at levels 1 and 2
- the number of students who gain key skills qualifications
- the rate of achievement of modern apprenticeship frameworks
- the teaching provided by agency teachers
- individual learning plans and their use in teaching and learning.
